English2.04 - Network Politics and International Collaboration: a View from the Social Science Research Council (USA)

Founded in 1923, the Social Science Research Council is an independent, non-profit institution committed to the organization of international research in the social sciences through its research programs, summer institutes, workshops, and fellowships. Tracing a brief history of the Council's activities, this paper outlines the Council's more recent efforts to organize international networks and collaborative research. Specifically, I consider the multiple political dimensions of network activity, ranging from relations to funders to the 'micro-politics' of building networks, considered in relation to the Council's stated mission of 'bringing necessary knowledge to public issues'.
