Institutionnal Francophonie has made 'cultural diversity' or 'dialogue between cultures' one of the major themes of its action programmes, especially since the Mauritius Summit in 1993.

Yet, if some french-speaking countries, notably France and Québec, have, in the last decades, set up specific public policies in the field of book-publishing, in order to limit side-effects of economic globalization, multilateral francophone institutions do not seem, so far, to have realized how large the chasm is between the possibilities of the countries of the north and those of the south in the field of book-publishing. Hence, an only half-hearted support given to the main actors in that field, which, not surprisingly, has failed to convince.

As a matter of fact, the most concrete and meaningful initiatives have been taken by private players, that identify themselves with altermondialism and try to promote solidarity in their undertakings, be it at the level of book production or or at that of commercialization. Here one can but mention the efforts made by the Afrilivres network of African publishers, the International Association of francophone bookshops (AILF) or the Alliance of independant publishers for another globalization, an organization which is actively seeking for equitable co-publications.

The purpose of this paper is to check on those innovative and selfless projects, which common aim is not to sacrifice diversity on the altar of an all encompassing unification of the book market.
