The development of cultural exchange between France and the Netherlands: the case of book translations

Translations from Dutch into French and from French into Dutch have developed in opposite directions. The proportion of translations from French has in the Netherlands declined since the beginning of the 1980s. This loss of position is roughly comparable to that of German: both languages, which were the only ones in a position to compete with English, have increasingly been marginalized by the hegemony of English which has continually improved its market share. In France the opposite tendency occurred: the number of translations from Dutch has increased, the quality of the translations improved and they were accompanied by a growing recognition of Dutch literature, which had previously been almost entirely unknown. It is argued that both tendencies can be understood as diverging strategies toward the increasing dominance of English and anglo-american culture. The widespread political and cultural opposition in France to ‘globalization’ has stimulated the interest for non-English literature and letters, but has no equivalent in the Netherlands where cultural colonization is generally taken for granted and hardly ever a matter of public debate.
