This lecture examines the books of a Canadian publisher, Hurtubise HMH, that have been produced in his exchanges in the domain of the international french speaking (francophone) publishing. It is based on the theories of the social circulation of the text and on the postcolonial studies. The works produced about twenty years ago on the history and sociology of books have shown the main importance of the publishing function on the formation and circulation of texts. The published text attains a reading public determined by the state of market. It is submitted to a selection and a production that determine its content, its bookform and its circulation. In this analysis, the agents that participate in the production of books belong to different national fields as well as to the field of french speaking world. In order to understand the relations between agents of this international fields, inherited by a colonial history, we go further back to certain elements of another theory, the postcolonial studies. These examine, in the literary texts, the historic and actual relations between dominant cultures and dominated cultures. Thus, they analyse the interpenetretion of cultures in the world, certain researchers underlying the reciprocate change that dominants and dominated go through the ones towards the others. This lecture takes into consideration the publishing process and the agents that participate there in. It considers the book as a product of complex relations between authors, illustrators, editors, publishers, as well as between places of decisions, of printing and of diffusion.
